Update on “Term Limit for Deanery Reps” Consultation

Synod members will recall last year’s discussion on the changes to the Church Representation Rules (CRR) in relation to a two-term limit (6 years) for lay representatives on deanery synods. There were a massive number of responses to this consultation, 928 in all – unprecedented – so thank you if you responded. Only 207 of the 928 responses wanted to keep the new Rule; the rest wanted it repealed or amended. So the Elections Review Group is recommending to General Synod that the new Rule be repealed and replaced with a new power for APCMs to impose however many term limits (if any) as they see fit. The recommendations need to be passed by a simple majority in order for amending legislation to be brought in July.
