Tin a Week ProjectThis month we would like to bring to your attention, and recommend, a local support project run by the Salvation Army, Addlestone, in which some of our churches are already involved. The project is called “Tin a Week” based on the assumption that for most of us it would be no hardship to add “one more tin of something to our weekly shopping” and donate it to the local people in need via a collection service at our Parish churches or other institutions. These gifts of tinned and dry food are then made into food parcels the Salvation Army can give to people usually referred to them by a health visitor or social services. Some of our local schools and churches have taken up this project already, including St Paul's Church, Addlestone; All Saints’, New Haw; Christ Church, Ottershaw, and Holy Trinity, Lyne and Longcross. Their support is highly appreciated and we hope that other churches will join their efforts. Moreover, volunteers are needed for distribution. There are circa 300 people on the current register, which is about 150 families. Volunteers, under the lead of Kay McCormack, The Salvation Army Addlestone Community Services Development Manager, make up the parcels and deliver them. Captain Hilary McClintock of the Salvation Army says: “We do this because there is such a need in the community and because we seek to serve the poor. It is less of a Salvation Army project and more of a Kingdom service. We give to anyone of any faith or none, without prejudice as need arises. “ Any other church wishing to support this project through collecting food, or anyone who is interested in helping with distribution, should contact Kay McCormack on 01932 851641.
