Bells Ring for Vicars’ Anniversaries

St Peter’s Church Chertsey bells rang for 2 hours 30 minutes during the afternoon of Sunday, 14th March, to mark the 700th anniversary of the appointment of the 1st Vicar of Chertsey, Richard le Gayte, in 1310 and the 10th anniversary of the appointment of Revd Tim Hillier on 14th March 2000.

The largest bell, the tenor, weighs one ton and an attempt was being made to ring a true and complete peal of 5040 changes of Grandsire Triples. Unfortunately, three quarters of the way through the peal two bells crossed over so the incorrect sequence of changes started to be rung and the attempt was stopped.
The ringers came from Chertsey, Chobham, Staines, Twickenham and Windsor.
