In recent months, a series of travel money scams has been reported in the Runnymede area. Random people are asked for money in the streets, and even church offices (and perhaps other “potentially charitable” places) have been victims. The setup is usually a woman with a baby or small child(ren) claiming that her purse was stolen/credit card swallowed by the cash machine etc and that she needs money for the train ticket/fuel etc to get herself and her child(ren) home to a location somewhere in Surrey or the surrounding counties. Considering the sudden glut of such “unfortunate happenings” it can only be a new line of scams, so we recommend that if you are approached and you feel you want to help then you can offer to accompany them to the train or fuel station and buy them what they need, rather than parting with your money. Most likely you will find that they decline.
