Following the success of last summer’s pilot scheme and an overwhelmingly positive response to the Easter Lunch Scheme an estimated 200 lunches per week are expected to be distributed to children within the community over the forthcoming summer holidays in the Addlestone & Chertsey area.
HeBrews coffee shop, part of St Paul’s Church, Addlestone, are organising lunches for local families who might otherwise struggle to feed their children during the school break.
Volunteers from within the church and the wider community will make up the packed lunches each day – which will consist of a fresh sandwich or filled roll, a fruit juice box, a sweet treat and a piece of fresh fruit. Parents and carers can also collect a free tea or filter coffee.
The team at HeBrews has carefully sourced their lunch supplies – using surplus food donated by Tesco in Addlestone via Fareshare, a national organisation that redistributes surplus food from industries. The local foodbank will also be donating extra ingredients where possible.
Project Coordinator, Ellie Pool, explained how the scheme will work: “This year we are taking lunches out into the community with pick up points around the area, making it accessible to all. Lunches will be offered to ALL children who want to collect a takeaway lunch regardless of circumstances with no advance booking required. In addition we are offering a Stay Play & Eat session on each Friday in August at the church hall with activities such as face painting, crafting, animal petting etc supported by the Tesco Community Champion.
We are repeating our ‘Sponsor a Local Child’ scheme inviting people who wish to donate funds for any top up purchases that are needed. It is estimated that £2.50 per week will cover top up purchases for one child. Should you wish to donate please send cheques payable to Addlestone PCC to The Parish Office, School Lane, Addlestone KT15 1TB clearly marked as a donation for Summer Lunches or visit their Just Giving page.
They also need volunteers for this amazing ambitious project, and it’s not too late to join their team to make cakes, make & pack sandwiches, distribute to or man pick-up points, collect donations from Tescos or offer activity sessions on the Fridays. Training will be provided – contact Ellie Pool on 07847 937309 or
