We have recently had a missive from Ben Enwuchola, formerly Nigerian Chaplain in London and now Assistant General Secretary of the Church of Nigeria, with the concerning news that our longstanding Kebbi Link Bishop Edmund has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Thankfully, this is still localised but Edmund needs surgery to remove it before cancer spreads around his body. Apparently, this cannot be performed in Nigeria, although he has had the necessary scans and tests done in Abuja, and so he is planning to come to England for the required operation. He knows Surrey quite well from visiting us in Runnymede several times, also our bishops in Guildford, and so he hopes hospitals local to us can meet his need. Our Lay Chair Keith Malcouronne, providentially through his directorship at Ashford & St Peter’s was able to contact the most suitable hospital, the Royal County hospital in Guildford which is the specialist cancer centre for Surrey, and has passed the surgeon’s requirements back to Edmund.
Our own Bishop Andrew has been alerted to this and we hope that his bishop’s discretionary fund may be able to contribute a modest gift. The Archbishop of Canterbury has also been contacted to see what other resources might be available to help as +Edmund, Kebbi Diocese and even the Church of Nigeria either lack resources or are overstretched at this time of oil price collapse and pandemic, both impoverishing an already struggling country.
It would be good if we as Runnymede Deanery could also show our support for +Edmund and any contributions from churches as well as individuals will be greatly appreciated.
